Strongest April/May La Nina since 1999

Tomer’s Take: Nino 3.4 region water temps are currently -1.1C. That’s the coldest water temp in this region since 1999. This anchors the atmosphere and the current pattern continues through May. I’m forecasting an active month of May across the Intermountain West with above normal amounts of rain, snow, and wind. The jet stream is […]

La Nina continues into Summer

Water temperatures in the Equatorial South Pacific are running about 1.0C colder than normal. The latest forecast calls for water temps to stay colder than normal into Summer – through June-July-August. The blue bars in the graph below represent La Nina. Here’s a look at the model spread over time. We’ve been locked into La […]

La Nina has officially arrived, again

La Nina is here for the 2nd straight Fall/Winter. Sea surface temps (SST’s) in the equatorial south Pacific have cooled to -0.5C (the official minimal threshold). The bulk of data suggests that La Nina continues through the entire upcoming Winter (87% chance according to NOAA). If you haven’t yet, please check out my Winter forecast. […]

AspenWeather.net‘s forecaster Ryan Boudreau and meteorologist Cory Gates issued their official winter forecast last week. I’ve known Ryan for a few years and I know Cory to be an exceptional meteorologist. Their combined passion for skiing is contagious. Winter […]

La Nina Watch continues

Snow is falling at Whistler/Blackcomb this morning. This snow will drop into the northern Rockies this week including Banff, Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. We’re still waiting on the official arrival of La Nina. Current water temps in the South Pacific near the equator are running “neutral” (-0.3C NINO3.4). La Nina and El Nino are normally […]

One place I like this winter

La Nina seems likely this winter. This should position the wintertime jet stream across the northern tier of the Rockies from December through March. If you missed my full winter forecast you can find it here. That said, one place I like this winter is Jackson Hole, WY. You might recall they did well last […]
