Tomer’s Take:
- All-time temperature records continue to fall.
- Mega high pressure dome running 3 standard deviations above 20-year average.
- Core of the heat is CA, NV, UT.
- High breaks down on 9/9. A small high pressure dome re-builds 9/11-9/12.
- Tropical remnants could affect the West on/after 9/12 through 9/17.
After this Mega High breaks down it opens the door for new moisture from an old tropical system to fill the void across the Intermountain West 9/12-9/17.
Mega High
Why so hot? Atmospheric pressure readings are running 3 standard deviations above the 20-year norm.
A few notable record highs:
- Salt Lake City, UT: 104° (all-time record)
- Sacramento, CA: 114° (all-time record)
- Livermore, CA: 116° (all-time record)
- Stockton, CA: 112° (all-time record)
- Grand Junction, CO: 100°
One place that continues to stand-out is Salt Lake City. They’ve hit 100 degrees or hotter 32 times this year. Previous 100 degree record was 21 occurrences.
Tropical Remnants
New moisture (from a dying tropical system) is possible across the Intermountain West between 9/12-9/17. This is not the Monsoon.
Example impact to Grand Teton in Wyoming.
