Colorado’s windstorm was rare: Stratospheric Intrusion, Tropopause Folding

In Synoptic-Dynamic Meteorology this is called Tropopause Folding. It also means the jet stream descended almost to the valley floor generating those destructive 100mph+ gusts and dust […]

Western snow forecast before and after Thanksgiving

I’m watching the storm track like a hawk – like this hawk I saw yesterday. It’s been an abnormally warm and dry Fall across most of the West with the storm track favoring higher pressures and ridging. Many ski resorts delayed their opening dates. Is there relief coming before Thanksgiving to the Lower 48 ski […]

Weekend snow chances

A windy, moisture-starved, and fast-moving cold front is currently racing through Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and into Colorado. I’m forecasting minor snow accumulation (or zero) for most ski areas. Notice the weekend storm system over the Pacific on the satellite image above. The jet stream ushers that low pressure into the West this weekend. Overall, it’s […]

The storm system currently hitting the PNW will send a cold front south into the lower 48 on Tuesday-Wednesday. It’s a fast-moving, moisture starved cold front. […]
